[Class 106 (ii)] [Also in Group VIII] The viscosity or concentration of liquids, particularly concentrations of cellulose pulp is indicated or regulated by imparting rotary movement to the liquid in a vessel 3 open at top and bottom and having a restricted opening in the bottom, variations in the concentration of the liquid causing variations in the velocity and hence in the shape of the surfaces 7, 8, which variations are used for indicating or regulating. The liquid flows upwards through a chamber and out over the top, an opening 6 in the chamber leading tangentially into a vessel 3 coned top and bottom and of cylindrical shape in the middle as shown. An air current is supplied to the vessel by a pipe 10 having a restriction 11, the pipe also communicating with a manometer 12. As the height of the paraboloid 7 changes, the head of liquid over the end 9 of the pipe changes, and also the pressure measured by the manometer 12. If the pipe is extended through the lower paraboloid 8 the same thing happens. The liquid in the vessel 3 may be rotated in other ways than by a constant head and tangential pipe ; a rotating vane is used in one form described. For regulating the supply of diluting liquid, a float may rest on the surface at the apex of the paraboloid 7 and movements thereof may be transmitted by a pivoted lever to a regulating valve.
