Abstract

487,519. Hydrogen - burning engines. ERREN ENGINEERING CO., Ltd., and ERREN, R. A. Feb. 17, 1937, No. 4796. [Class 7 (ii)] Oxygen, together with steam from a receiver in which the steam formed as a product of combustion is stored, is admitted during the suction stroke and hydrogen is admitted separately and under pressure at the beginning of the compression stroke. Oxygen is supplied from a reservoir b, through a reducing valve b<1> and a heated pipe f and steam is supplied from the receiver i through the pipe m, cock o and non-return valve n to the inlet valve d in the cylinder head. Hydrogen is stored in a reservoir c and passes through a reducing valve c<1>, and a rotary or other valve e on the cylinder, into the cylinder at the beginning of the compression stroke. A sparking-plug h is provided. Exhaust steam passes through a valve j, pipe k and either directly into the receiver i or through the pipe i<1> and valve w to either the atmosphere, a condenser or an exhaust turbine. The receiver may be heated or cooled by external means and may be divided into several chambers and have a compressor for varying the pressure therein. The inlet and outlet of the receiver may bo regulated either directly by the engine or by means of a governor. Water may be injected into the cylinder at the commencement of the working stroke. The reducing valves are interconnected so that the proportion of hydrogen to oxygen supplied is constant. In order that the engine may work with oil fuel instead of with hydrogen, the cock o can be turned to shut off the steam receiver and to allow air to be drawn into the cylinder. Oil fuel may be supplied through an injector p. Specification 406,748 is referred to.
