Abstract
485,946. Cables. SIEMENS & HALSKE AKT.-GES. Dec. 3, 1936, No. 33218. Convention date, Dec. 4, 1935. [Class 36] Spacers for use in air-space insulated cables are formed as thin walled corrugated or grooved insulating tubes, one or more of the tubes being wound round the cable conductor, or plurality of tubes being placed around the conductor so as to extend longitudinally thereof. The corrugations or grooves may be annular or helical, and the tubes may be reinforced by longitudinally extending internal strings. Fig. 5 shows a concentric cable having inner and outer conductors 12, 15 separated by a helical spacer 13, whilst in the construction shown in Fig. 6, a plurality of longitudinally extending spacers 21 separate the inner and outer conductors 20, 23. The. spacers may be formed of cellulose derivatives, rubber, artificial resins, e.g. polystyrol, or fibrous material, preferably impregnated. Preferably, however, the spacers are formed by extrusion from a hardenable plastic material, the corrugations or grooves being impressed by a string wound round the tube, as shown in Fig. 4, as it leaves the extrusion die. The string may be removed after the tube has hardened, or may remain on the tube.
