Abstract
484,936. Road kerbs and gutters ; blocks. HOLMAN, T. E., and JONES, D. G. M. Dec. 17, 1936, No. 34756. [Classes 87 (i) and 107] [Also in Group XI] A road kerb 10 is held against lateral movement by one or bonding members, such as rag bolts 16, which are fixed. in the kerb and project into a bedding material 14 extending both below and to the rear face of the kerb. The rag bolts or the like may be fitted to the lower or the rear faces of the kerb, or both, and additional rag bolts 18 may be provided to connect adjacent kerb blocks. The bolts 16 may be tied to one another or to the bedding material by ties 20. The top, front, or both top and front faces of the kerb may be provided with a wear-resisting facing of rustless metal. In a modification the bonding members are formed by rods situated on one or both sides of the kerb and having bent upper ends which enter holes in the kerb. The Provisional Specification describes also modified constructions of kerbs and the use of bonding members in channel blocks. In one construction, the kerb is of angle section and is fitted with one or more bonding members and in another construction the kerb is in the form of an inverted trough having laterally projecting parts which effect the bonding. Hollow kerbs are also described which are adapted to carry electric wires or gas or water pipes, or which carry lamps disposed adjacent windows provided in the top, front, or both top and front faces of the kerbs. Lights of a distinctive colour are employed at pedestrian crossings.
