Abstract

Mono- and di-methylolurea, or mixtures thereof, are prepared in solution or in crystalline form by condensing urea and formaldehyde in the presence of a sufficient quantity of an ethanolamine to make a neutral or alkaline solution, preferably at normal temperature. In example (1) a solution containing formaldehyde, urea and triethanolamine is allowed to stand for about 12 hours; on concentrating in vacuo at normal temperature, dimethylolurea is obtained or if the solution be diluted to make a 20 per cent dimethylolurea solution it remains stable for weeks; (2) monoethanolamine replaces the triethanolamine of example (1). Diethanolamine or technical ethanolamine may also be used. Solutions of methylolurea prepared with monoethanolamine are capable of further condensation on heating without the addition of acidic substances, a property which is made use of in textile treatment. The other solutions produced may also be used in the treatment of textiles.
