Abstract

483,473. Cooling cylinders. PARSONS, H. Oct. 16, 1936, No. 28107. [Class 7 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIX] An open circuit cooling system in which water from a bulk supply is pumped through the cooling jackets and then discharged to waste comprises a thermostatic device having a liquid space with connections 1, 2, 3 to the jackets, the discharge pipe, and a byepass back to the pump suction respectively, and a heat-responsive element 4 in the said space which controls only the byepass connection 3, means also being provided to prevent the entry of air or gas from the discharge connection to the byepass 3 when the element is cold, as when starting up the engine. As shown a sealed metallic bellows 4 fixed at its upper end operates a valve 8 which closes the byepass as the temperature increases. The valve 8 is carried by a spindle 6 guided in a bridge 7. A thermometer connection 5 is provided and the byepass has a hand-operated cock 10. As shown the means for preventing air entering the byepass comprises a second valve 9 on the spindle 6. Instead of or in addition to the valve 9, a non-return valve may be provided between the outlet 2 and the byepass 3 and the valve 8 may be formed by the lower end of the bellows.
