Abstract

931,087. Pressurized cooling systems for internal - combustion engines. J. L. GRATZMULLER. Dec. 15, 1960 [Dec. 17, 1959; March 9, 1960; Dec. 7, 1960], No. 43179/60. Class 64 (3). Water or other liquid circulated by a pump P through a closed circuit cooling system of an internal-combustion engine 1 is maintained by pressurizing means other than the circulation pump P at a superatmospheric pressure sufficiently high to avoid the formation of steam and independent of the temperature and load conditions of the engine. The pressure may be applied by compressed air supplied through a line 11 to an expansion tank 8 above the liquid level therein (Fig. 4), by a pump other than the circulation pump (as for example pump 21, Fig. 17), or by means of a liquid column (Fig. 11, not shown). The expansion tank may, as indicated in Fig. 4 (and in Fig. 6. not shown), be connected into the " cold " fluid line 4 leading from the radiator 3. Alternatively, the tank 8 may be connected into the " hot " fluid line 2 between the engine and the radiator (Figs. 5, 8, 9, 10, not shown). The system may include means such as a valved container 13 (Fig. 4), for filling without loss of pressure and also a valve to relieve any excess pressure. Means to regulate the inflow of pressurized air to prevent damage to valves &c. on starting, may be provided. A system in which the engine is automatically set to idling condition should the coolant temperature exceed a prescribed maximum is described (Fig. 13, not shown). In Fig. 17 the engine coolant is circulated in a system 1-2-3-4 pressurized by the pump 21 supplying liquid from a reservoir 24. Excess water from this system is discharged through a non-return valve 145 into a second and lower pressure system 146-141-142-143 which includes a heat-exchanger 126 for cooling engine oil. Excess water from this latter system is discharged through a non-return valve 148 into a still lower pressure system 118-123-124-127 which includes a heat-exchanger 116 for cooling air supercharged in a compressor 113 driven by a turbine 111 operated by the engine exhaust gases. The arrangement includes an additional pump 155 (manual or power-operated) for filling purposes. The radiators 3, 141, 118 of the respective systems are arranged in line with respect to air flow so that the supercharging-air cooling circuit radiator 118 is exposed to the coolest air and the high-pressure engine coolant radiator 3 is exposed to warmer air from at least the radiator 118. The radiator arrangement may alternatively be as shown in Fig. 16.
