Abstract

483,178. Yielding couplings; slipping clutches. DRAMINSKY, P. March 15, 1937, No. 7553. Convention date, March 26, 1936. [Class 80 (ii)] A yielding shaft-coupling which slips under abnormal load comprises a driven casing 2, having an internal cam surface 19, against which plungers 6, radially slidable in a driving member 17 and carrying anti-friction rollers 10, are outwardly pressed by one or more compression springs 18. The cam is symmetrically shaped and so arranged that, when the parts move relatively away from the rest position shown, in either direction, all the plungers are simultaneously pressed inwards with equal force. The spring-pressure, which is supplemented by centrifugal force, is such that, under normal conditions, the device acts as a yielding coupling, but, under a sudden overload, the rollers can ride over the crests 19a of the cam surface and allow complete relative rotation until the overload is reduced. The spring- pressure may additionally be supplemented by air-pressure, the plungers 6 being an airtight fit in their guides. Air-escape holes at 16 are provided for damping oscillations. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes a modification, Fig. 1 (Cancelled), in which the cam is replaced by an equivalent crank arrangement, comprising crank-shafts 5, journalled in the driven casing 2, their pins 4 passing through the plungers 6. The compressed-air pressure may wholly replace the spring pressure. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
