Abstract
482,097. Pencil holders. FEND, K. July 20, 1937, No. 20053. Convention date, July 23, 1936. [Class 146 (iii)] In a pencil holder having interchangeable leads and comprising two slidably coupled casings, of which the rear or feed casing carries a pusher bar capable of being set to engage the lead carrier to be advanced and the forward or guide casing contains the lead carriers, the pusher bar 26, Fig. 1, is freely attached to the front end of the feed casing 18 in such a manner that, when the pencil is turned into an inclined or horizontal position. the forward end of the pusher bar moves under gravity to its lowest position and lies opposite the lead carrier 4 which is to be advanced, the setting of which is rendered visible bv a mark 39 provided diametrically opposite to it on the outside of the pencil casing 34. The lead carriers 4 are guided in spaces produced by a cross-shaped partition 3 in the guide casing 1 and are pressed rearward by springs 7 to an extent limited by a rim 9 on the partition 3. They are locked in advanced position by pins 6, projecting through slots 2 in the casing 1 and shaped slots 11, Fig. 2, in a rotatably mounted locking sleeve 10. As each carrier is advanced the pin (i carries the sleeve 10 first in one direction by engaging an edge 16 of the slot 11 and then in the reverse direction by means of an edge 13 so that it finally rests under a locking shoulder 14. The carrier is released by the partial or full advancement of any other carrier. Fixed to the casing 1 is a sleeve 17 and in this is slidably mounted the casing 18, which is engaged by a flanged collar 22a and pressed rearwardly by a spring 27. Between the flange 23 of the collar 22a and a headed pin 20 on the casing 18 is an annular space in which moves freely the head of the pusher bar 26. An octagonal collar 29 carrying an octagonal casing 30 is secured to the sleeve 17, and the rear casing 34 is held on the casing 18 between a fixed washer 33 and screwed pocket clip 36 and cap 37. The cap may be removed to gain access to the interior of the casing 18, used for storing leads. If the pencil is not positioned correctly so that the pusher bar does not come exactly opposite a lead carrier 4, it is nevertheless guided into position by the sharpened edge of the rim 9. In alternative constructions the pusher bar is cranked at its rear end, and freely mounted on the casing 18 by means of a ball-socket joint or a pivot pin.
