481,831. Lathes. KROLL, W. April 20, 1937, No. 11310. Convention date, April 20, 1936. Addition to 450,938. [Class 83 (iii)] A device for giving the longitudinal turning tool a copying movement in a lathe according to the parent Specification, comprises two crosspieces h, i, Fig. 1, contacting along a common inclined surface, one piece h being connected with the template-controlled tool m<1> and adapted, upon relative movement with respect to the second piece i, to move the tool transversely of the workpiece b. The tool m<1>, Fig. 3, is carried in a transversely movable block d which is urged away from the work by compression springs, a roller g carried by a short shaft in the block engaging a template formed in the cross-piece h. The block d is carried for longitudinal movement in a carriage a operated by a screw 9. Projections o<1>, o<2> on the carriage are adapted to strike pins k<1>, k<2> respectively, on the cross-piece i and move the latter to effect, through the wedge action of the inclined contacting surface between the crosspieces, and the springs e, the positioning of the tool for a cutting operation and its relief at the end of an operation. A reversing clutch is also operated by the cross-piece i to reverse the direction of motion of the carriage.
