Abstract

481,347. Pistons. BOHN ALUMINUM & BRASS CORPORATION. May 27, 1937, No. 14707. Convention date, July 20, 1936. [Class 122 (i)] In a light metal piston having an oval skirt with its inner axis coincident with the gudgeon pin axis, and thrust faces 18, 19 separated from the head by slots 26 and connected by webs 22 carrying the gudgeon pin bosses, a plate 28 of material of low-coefficient of expansion extends along the inner wall of each web 22 between the bosses and one or both thrust faces. The thrust face 18 may be slit at 27 along the whole or part of its length and each face 18, 19 may be relieved on areas 21 bounded by curved lines 20. The slit face is stiffened by webs 23 extending towards it from the bosses. Bands 24.which connect the lower ends of the thrust faces are separated from the bosses by slots 25 which are enlarged on the side of the bosses towards the thrust face 19. Struts 13 of U-form extend between the bosses and head. Webs 22 may be parallel or relatively inclined. Specifications 313,893, [Class 122 (i)], 417,007, 436,066, and 448,260 are referred to.
