Abstract

Acetylene is produced from hydrocarbons containing more than two carbon atoms in the molecule by leading an inert carrier gas through an electric arc, and adding the hydrocarbons to the gas both before and immediately behind the arc. The hydrocarbons added before the arc may be gaseous, vaporized or liquid, but they must not be in the liquid state when they reach the arc. The hydrocarbons added behind the arc are preferably liquid and in a finely divided form, and they are so supplied that they mix with the arc gases but do not enter the arc itself. The carrier gas may be hydrogen or carbon monoxide or mixtures containing them, with or without lower hydrocarbons such as methane. The hydrocarbons added behind the arc may be centrifuged to separate carbon black and then used again. The gas remaining after acetylene has been separated may be returned for use as the carrier gas after removing from the gas a portion corresponding to the increase in volume in the arc. The addition of hydrocarbons before the arc is preferably adjusted so that the expenditure of energy for the formation of acetylene no longer decreases when the supply of hydrocarbons is further increased. In the examples: (1) propane is added to a stream of illuminating gas which is passed through an electric arc, and the gases leaving the arc are quenched with gas oil; a gas containing olefines and 19,4 per cent of acetylene and its homologues is obtained; (2) illuminating gas preheated to 350 DEG C. is passed through an electric arc after addition of gas oil, which is vaporized before it reaches the arc; the gases leaving the arc are quenched with the same gas oil, a gas containing olefines and 18,4 per cent of acetylene and its homologues being obtained; the oil used for quenching is recirculated, a part being supplied before the arc and fresh oil being added at any suitable place in the cycle; the gas containing acetylene is worked up in an acetaldehyde plant, and an appropriate portion of the residual gas is returned for use as carrier gas. U.S.A. Specification 1,887,658 is referred to.
