Abstract

A mixture of hydrogen, carbon monoxide and acetylene is obtained by submitting gaseous hydrocarbons, such as methane or gases containing it, in admixture with an oxygen-yielding compound or a mixture of such compounds, such as carbon dioxide or steam, to the action of the electric arc. If carbon electrodes and an excess of oxygen-yielding compound are used, the carbon of the electrodes reacts, thus providing a means of varying the proportions of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the product. In an example, a methane-rich residue from the treatment of coke oven gas is mixed with carbon dioxide and treated in an electric arc between carbon electrodes.ALSO:A mixture of acetylene, hydrogen, and carbon monoxide is obtained by submitting gaseous hydrocarbons, such as methane or gases containing it, in admixture with an oxygen-yielding compound or a mixture of such compounds, such as carbon dioxide or steam, to the action of the electric arc. If carbon electrodes and an excess of oxygen-yielding compound are employed, the carbon of the electrodes reacts, thus providing a means of varying the proportions of carbon monoxide and hydrogen in the product, these being preferably adjusted to the correct proportions for the synthesis of, for example, methyl alcohol. When employing steam it may be advantageous to add carbon monoxide of foreign origin. In an example, a methane-rich residue from the treatment of coke oven gas is mixed with carbon dioxide and treated in an electric arc between carbon electrodes.
