Abstract

480,054. Motor - vehicle steering - gear. THOMAS, H. K. Feb. 27, 1937, No. 5967. [Class 79 (v)] Steering-mechanism including a continuously-variable gear ratio comprises a lever arm 14 connected to the road wheels and engaged at 13 by a part moved by the steering- wheel, adjusting means being provided for moving the pivot 23 of the arm rectilinearly with reference to the point 13 to alter the mechanical advantage. In the construction shown the lever 14 comprises two spaced bars having a nut 11 pivoted thereto at 13, the nut being engaged by a screw thread on the steering shaft 10. The pivot pin 23 of the lever slides in grooves 25 in the gear casing 26, these grooves extending perpendicularly to the axis of the screw, and the position of the pivot being adjusted by a hand lever 29 pivoted at 28 and having a forked end engaging a distance piece 20 on the lever. The distance piece is formed with projections 21 engaging slots 19 in the lever 14. The other end of the lever carries a pin 15 on which is mounted a block 16 engaged by the forked end of a lever 17 fixed to a rocking shaft 31 having an arm 18 connected to the road wheels. With the construction shown as the road wheels are moved from the straight-ahead position the mechanical advantage of the steering wheel over the road wheels increases.
