[Class 80 (ii)] In a clutch comprising a split ring 11 secured at its mid-point by a bar 10 to a driving member 3 and normally contracted out of contact with a driven drum 9 by springs 13 connecting its ends, the ring is expanded into engagement with the drum by outward movement of a longitudinallyarranged lever 18 which acts through a stirrup member 19 to turn a pair of sectors 14 which are pivoted on pins 15 secured to the member 3 and which have lugs 14<1> against which the ends of the ring 11 bear. The lever 18 pivots in an aperture in a plate 16 secured on the pins 15, while the stirrup 19 is carried by the lever 18 through an adjustable screw 20. As shown, the lever 18 is operated by axial movement of a conical member 21 which is actuated by a handle 31 through rope gearing 27, 28, 29 and a yoke 23. Alternatively, the outer end of the rod 18 may be weighted, so as to give centrifugal engagement. The members 3 and 9 may, as shown, carry belt pulleys 4 and 8.
