Abstract
478,675. Exercising-apparatus. MARLOWE, H. J. July 24, 1936, No. 20503. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1935. [Class 132 (i)] An exercising-machine comprises a motordriving pedal and pivotally interrelated mounting bars for a movable seat and a movable hand rest respectively. The machine comprises a metal tubing framework 11, 13, 15, 18, 19, on which is detachably fixed a gear box B and an electric motor 61 driving through a shaft 62 housed in a fixed tube 81, a shaft 64, Fig. 4, a worm 67 on which drives shaft 20 carrying the cranks 21 and pedals 22. A gear wheel 71 on shaft 20 drives through an idler wheel 72 a wheel 74, a crank 76 on which oscillates a connecting rod 23. The rod 23 oscillates a bar 25 pivoted between frame members 15 at 26, and pivoted at 36 to a bar 34 carrying the adjustable handle bar 32. The bar 34 is pivoted at 35 to a bar 29 pivoted at 38 to the seat 27 and at 30 to a fin rigid with the gear box B. A further bar 39 is pivoted at 40 to the seat and at 42 to the frame and serves to maintain the seat horizontal during movement thereof. A spring 44 is pivotally mounted at 46 in a part 45 of the gear box B and at 51 is pivoted to a nut 52 slidably adjustable along the bar 25 by means of a handle 55 for rotating the threaded bolt 53 engaging the nut. The nut 52 is adjusted for riders of different weights indicated by a pointer 58 rigid with the nut movable over a scale 56 along bar 25. In operation, the rider switches on the motor whereupon the pedals are rotated and the seat and handle bar rocked simultaneously between the positions shown in full and dotted lines, the return to the " full " position being assisted by the spring 44. The gear box B is interchangeable with another gear box including a two-speed gearing changed by an external handle operating through a clutch.
