Abstract
478,343. Sight-training apparatus. TAYLOR, J. Y., TAYLOR, C. C., and TAYLOR, E. A. April 14, 1936, No. 28347/35. [Class 81 (ii)] Apparatus for exercising and training the eye muscles comprises means for intermittently exposing and covering portions of reading matter or other matter to be viewed by the patient in such manner that a line of matter is displayed a portion only at a time in the direction of normal reading, and binocular light-deviating means such as prisms through which the displayed matter is observed, the prisms or the like being of such deviating power as to produce an increase in or variation from the normal muscular movement of each eye in passing from the position of relaxation between successive exposures to the position of fixation upon the successive portions of the exposed matter. As shown the display apparatus comprises a box 10 having a window 11 in three portions behind which is mounted a roll displaying reading matter. Three camactuated shutters are arranged to fall and then rise in succession from left to right after which the roll is turned to present further reading matter. The cams are mounted on an electrically-driven shaft which is connected to the roll shaft through a chain and mutilated gearing. The patient observes the reading matter through prisms 14 placed before his eyes and orientated according to the training to be given. Pictures or number charts may replace the reading matter. Other light-deviating means such as mirrors may be employed in place of the prisms. Specification 458,503, [Group XX], is referred to.
