Abstract
Hard alloys, particularly for the production of tools and other articles by moulding, consist of 80-95 per cent of one or more carbides of titanium, zirconium, cerium, thorium, chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, and uranium, up to 15 per cent of one or more of the metals iron, cobalt, and nickel, and 0,1-5 per cent of the constituents of a bronze consisting of copper and one or more of the following elements: beryllium, magnesium, calcium, zinc, strontium, cadmium, barium, mercury, boron, aluminium, scandium, gallium, yttrium, indium, lanthanum, thallium, and tin. The alloys may be made by heating a mixture of the powdered constituents in a closed mould in a non-oxidizing atmosphere while being subjected to mechanical pressure which is continued up to the time of cooling. The surface of the product may be carburized by passing the gases of the non-oxidizing atmosphere through a volatile hydrocarbon before their admission to the furnace.
