Abstract

Aluminium alloys particularly suitable for wrought parts of internal-combustion engines, aircraft, and automobiles, contain 1,1-5,5 per cent of copper, 2-6,8 per cent of zinc, 1,6-5 per cent of magnesium, 0,02-3 per cent of iron, and 0,05-1 per cent of silicon, with or without up to 3,5 per cent of nickel, up to 2 per cent of manganese, up to 3 per cent of antimony, up to 2,5 per cent of cobalt, and up to 1 per cent of titanium, the total content of these five metals being not over 4 per cent, and the total of copper and zinc being not over 9,75 per cent. Up to a total of 2 per cent of any of the metals, chromium, silver, molybdenum, beryllium, tin, lead, tungsten, vanadium, boron, zirconium, cerium, thorium, and lithium, and up to a total of 0,5 per cent of impurities such as cadmium, calcium, bismuth, arsenic, sodium, and potassium, may also be present. Heat-treatment may consist in heating to 410-480 DEG C. for 30 minutes, quenching in water, heating at 120-180 DEG C. for 6-24 hours, and cooling in air or quenching in water. Specifications 350,446 and 425,128 are referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the ranges of some of the elements are wider than those given above.
