[Classes 7 (i) and 7 (ii)] To obtain improved balancing in a combustion component for a combustion-product plant, it is formed of one or more units each comprising two pairs of cylinders, the cylinders A, B of each pair being in substantial alignment with a common combustion space and fitted with opposed pistons 1a, 1b. Each of the four pistons is connected to a separate crankshaft and the four crank-shafts 2a ... 2d are interconnected so that the motion of the two pistons on the same side of the combustion chambers is the same and in phase, while the crank-shafts at the same end of the assembly rotate in relatively opposite directions. A number of such units may be arranged in a vertical stack, with four vertical crank-shafts to which the pistons of each unit are connected. Rotary or reciprocating compressors 3a ... 3d for supercharging may be driven from the crank-shafts. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 2, the movements of compressor pistons 3a, 3b at opposite ends are in opposite directions, while the movements of compressor pistons 3a, 3c at the same end of the unit are the same and in phase. The crank-shafts 2a, 2b at opposite ends may be connected by coupling rods 9, Fig. 3, supported centrally by a rotating crank 10, or by connecting-rods 11, 12, Fig. 4, connected to arms 13, 14 pivoted at 15. The latter arrangement ensures that different thermal expansion of the rods '11, 12 will not alter the relative positions of the crank-shafts, and the arms 13, 14 may be connected by a pin adapted to break under excess load. The cylinders &c. are shown as having inlet and exhaust valves 5, 6 in a lateral extension 4 of the combustion space and may be constructed as described in Specifications 475,036 and 475,174.
