Abstract

472,411. Expanding-pulley gearing. WIGGLESWORTH, F. March 28, 1936, No. 9243. [Class 80 (ii)] In a multiple expanding pulley, the pulleyhalves A, A' of each oppositely-movable group are connected together by sets .of bolts C, C<x> and opposite-handed screw means is provided for simultaneously moving the connected groups, such means being operable from a common member, in some cases only when stationary, and in others when running. The belt is thus maintained in a constant plane. The pulley-halves are each formed with axial spacing projections D, D', which pass through arcuate slots in adjacent pulley-halves. In Fig. 1, the connecting bolts C, C<x> themselves are oppositely threaded for engagement with a group of pinions P, meshing with a central adjusting wheel P<1>, turning of which moves adjacent pulley-halves A, A<1> in opposite directions. In Fig. 3, a central adjusting- screw R, is oppositely threaded in bosses A<6>, A<7> of the end pulley-halves A<1>, A, and is axially located on the shaft B carrying the pulley assembly. Ball-bearings may be arranged between the threaded parts and the bosses A<6>, A<7>. In a modification the end pulleyhalves are internally engaged by an oppositely threaded sleeve rotatable on the shaft B.
