Abstract

471,871. Typewriters etc.; addressing- machines. SHERMAN, J. Q., and STANDARD REGISTER CO. March 11, 1936, No. 10292/37. Divided out of 471,868. [Classes 100 (ii) and 100 (iv)] In typewriting, addressing, and like machines, a strip is fed by means of one or more endless bands or chains carrying a number of pins arranged to engage, one or more at a time, with apertures in the strip and pull the strip past the printing position, means being provided for guiding the strip into engagement with the pins, and for stripping the strip from the pins after the required feedmovement. As applied to an addressing- machine, a multiple strip 21, Fig. 5, is pulled past the printing position by means of pins 32 mounted on alternate links of a pair of endless chains 33 passing over pairs of sprocket-wheels 34, 26. The strip is guided on to the pins by means of the table of the machine, and is stripped by means of a guide-rod 36. The shaft 35 of the sprockets 34 is mounted in arcuate slots 131 and can be moved from one end of the slots to the other to vary the number of pins in engagement with the strip. The sprocket-wheels may be adjustable axially according to the width of the strip. The shaft 30 of the sprockets 26 may be operated intermittently by the means described in Specification 471,868 and comprising ratchet-mechanism operated by rack 63 in connection with a rockshaft, provision being made for mounting the shaft at the front or side of the machine so that the strip can be fed forwardly or laterally. The strip may be held in engagement with the pins by means of the slotted guides 75 described in the above-mentioned Specification. The chains may be arranged to pass over three sprockets, one of these being spring-urged to tighten the chain. As applied to a typewriter, endless chains 33, Fig. 10, having pins 32 for engaging the strip 21 are arranged on sprocketwheels above the platen 100. Alternatively, the chains may pass around sprocket-wheels arranged above and on the platen. The Provisional Specification describes also an arrangement comprising a reciprocating carriage supporting tapered feed-pins which are moved into and out of feeding position by means of a stationary cam. Specifications 370,429 and 408,125 also are referred to.
