Abstract

470,167. Automatic control systems. SCHENCK EISENGIESSEREI UND MASCHINENFABRIK DARMSTADT GES., C. Jan. 18, 1937, No. 1499. Convention date, Jan. 18, 1936. [Class 38 (iv)] Amplitude of oscillation of material under test is maintained constant by a contact member C fixed to the mass A under test and co-operating with one or more contacts E to short circuit a resistance F for a period during each oscillation varying with the amplitude. The mass A is driven by an electric motor B so that it oscillates at a frequency just below that required for resonance. The resistance F may be in the field circuit of the motor or it may constitute the operating coil of a carbon pile or other regulator in the field circuit. In another arrangement, Fig. 8, it forms the coil Gl of a balanced relay N adapted to control a reversible motor O adjusting a resistance in series with the motor field. In order to obtain correction proportional to the amplitude, two or more contacts are used and the normal distance between the contact member and each contact is progressively increased as indicated in Fig. 5. Increasing the number of contacts reduces the load on each.
