Abstract

469,501. Spare - wheel holders. VAUXHALL MOTORS, Ltd., and DREW, H. April 17, 1936, No. 11041. [Class 136 (i)] A spare-wheel retainer for use on motor vehicles comprises a number of flexible members arranged and adapted to contact with the wheel at spaced points, and adjusting means by which the flexible members may be drawn taut against the wheel. In the form shown, the spare wheel 1 is arranged horizontally to fit into a segmental recess 2 in the lower part of the rear luggage compartment of a vehicle. The retaining device comprises two chains 3, each fastened at one end to a bracket 4 on the base of the compartment, and at the other end to a common link 5, adapted to be engaged with a hook 6 on a nut 7, which is traversed along a coacting screw 10 by means of a rotatable handle engaging the outer end of the screw, whereby the chains 3 are drawn taut against the wheel. The screw 10 is mounted in a slot 9 cut in the partition 8 forming the floor of the upper compartment, and the nut 7 is formed with wings which overlap the edges of the slot 9 and slide along the underside of the partition 8.
