[Class 60] [Also in Group XXII] A tailstock with a single lever control for a grinding or like machine has a longitudinal slot in the body portion, a slide block on the barrel, movable within the slot, and mechanism associated with the lever and slide block whereby the lever is adapted to control the whole of the operative movements of the barrel which is brought forward to the work by spring pressure. The lever j, Fig. 3, when rotated in an anticlockwise direction serves to rotate through gear teeth k, Fig. 2, a toothed quadrant l; a stud n on the latter engages a slot in one end of a link p which is pivotally connected at its other end to a block r sliding in a slot s in the tailstock housing and fixedly connected to the tailstock barrel. The barrel is thus retracted against the pressure of springs f, Fig. 1, finally passing the deadcentre position of the link and pin, the former coining to rest against a pin u when the barrel is held stationary by the springs. Opposite rotation of the lever allows the barrel to be fed forward by the springs until the centre b mounted in antifriction bearings c, d, contacts the work, continued rotation of the lever j moves the stud along the slot in the link p without further movement of the band and finally draws the clamping pads h together to hold the centre in the working position. In a modification, (not shown), the link and gear segment are replaced by a lever engaging a roller, and a pair of pawls retain the barrel in its retracted position.
