Abstract

<PICT:0467617/III/1> Hydrocarbon oils are fractionally distilled by passing the vaporized oil into a primary fractionating column, withdrawing in liquid form one or more fractions formed at different levels between the top and bottom of the column into a secondary distillation column in which the fraction is freed from unwanted lowest boiling constituents by being heated outside the column and returning the constituents removed to the primary column at substantially the same level at which the fraction was withdrawn. The secondary columns may be situated within the primary column. A fraction collecting on a plate in the main column 1 is withdrawn through a line 3 to the secondary column 2 where low boiling-point constituents are removed by directing the reflux collecting on the bottom plate through a pipe 11 to the left compartment formed by a plate 16 in the bottom of the column and circulating the liquid through a line 6 back into a tray in the right - hand compartment, the liquid being heated while passing through the pipe 6 by means of a heat-exchanger. Part of the distillate drawn off at the top of the column may be condensed in a condenser 14 and returned to the column as reflux, the remainder passing through the line 4 back to the column 1.
