[Class 16] In a cover element for use with sheets 18 of material such as paper, cloth, or metal attached together by means of a binding element 16 consisting of a series of attaching loops passed through openings along corresponding margins of the sheets, the cover having parallel rows of openings spaced in accordance with the spacing of the loops of the binding element, there is provided in the cover midway and between the rows of openings a crease or fold to facilitate the assembling of the cover and the binding element and to provide ready folding of the cover when using the book. The binding element may consist of a length of wire bent to provide spaced loops as described in Specifications 422,409 and 447,231, or a length of wire bent into a simple spiral. As shown in Fig. 5, the cover comprises a spine 20b and sides 29b secured together by means such as stitching or adhesive, and the spine is folded along a central zone 31. In the form shown in Fig. 8, the main part of the spine is arranged outside of and closely adjacent the binding element 16, and is creased or otherwise treated to provide a zone of weakness 31e, and strips 34 of relatively rigid material may be inset on opposite sides of the zone 31e. Four rows of perforations are provided, and the portions of the spine lying between the outer-pairs of rows are folded and secured together. In a modification, of the form shown in Fig. 8, the intermediate main portion of the spine arranged on the outside of the binding element is spaced from the latter and may be V- shaped. In a further form, the cover spine has two rows of perforations, is folded inwardly so that the two rows coincide with each other for the reception of the binding element, and the folded portion is secured by stitching or other means. In another form, the spine is provided with four rows of perforations, is folded between the two inner rows so that these rows coincide with each other and to form an outward projection from the spine, and the loops of the binding element pass from the inside to the outside of the cover through one of the outer rows of perforations, then through the two inner rows, and into the cover through the other outer row.
