465,858. Exhaust and like silencers. SALENIUS, C. G. T. Aug. 29, 1936, No. 23718. Convention date, Aug. 29, 1935. [Class 7 (ii)] In a silencer for exhaust or intake conduits of engines, compressors, &c., the inlet pipe 2 leading the gases into an expansion chamber 1 is constructed with a dished reflecting-surface 6, so that the sound waves issue at an angle to the direction of the inlet pipe. The mouth of the inlet pipe may be bevelled as at 4 ; also the end of the pipe may be doubled back on itself before being dished. The expansion chamber may be lined with glass wool or other fibrous or woolly material, or may itself be made of asbestos or of sheet iron with a lead coating. Water may be injected into the chamber, and it may be cooled externally by air or water. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes the following subject-matter, which does not appear in the Specification as accepted. The entrance to the outlet pipe 3 may be bevelled similar to the end 4. Fig. 5 (Cancelled) shows another form of inlet pipe, the end being split up into a number of dished tongues 9 which reflect the sound waves through diametrically opposite slots 10. Instead of bevelling the mouth of the inlet pipe, reflectors or screens may be arranged adjacent thereto.
