1362274 Silencing exhaust gas flow TENNECO Inc 3 Aug 1971 [26 Aug 1970] 36444/71 Heading F1B To reduce or eliminate whistle at the upstream edge of a sharp edged opening 15 of an exhaust pipe 7 to which a chamber 13, e.g. a quarter wave length tube, is connected, the pipe wall is deformed outwardly to produce a protrusion or protrusions 17, 21 close to and upstream of the sharp edge 16. The protrusion may be crescent shaped, Fig. 5 (not shown), or annular, Fig. 6 (not shown). The chamber 13 is located upstream of a silencer 9.
