Abstract

464,809. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRANCIS, V. J. Nov. 7, 1935, No. 30811. [Class 39 (i)] A high-pressure metal-vapour discharge device, e.g. a doublewalled mercury lamp, has at least one main thermionic electrode 4, which is heated by the discharge only and consists of, or is coated with, an electronemitting material such as an alkaline earth compound, and has also an auxiliary electrode 7 of refractory metal which is arranged near the main electrode so that some portion, preferably its end, is substantially in the centre of the discharge column whereby it is heated by the discharge, and the tendency of the starting voltage to increase materially during life is abolished or substantially reduced. The electrode 4 consists of a rod of alkaline earth oxide enclosed by a tungsten spiral which may be used to heat the electrode during manufacture. The tungsten electrode 7 is arranged at a distance of 2 mms. from the electrode 4 and comprises a coil 8 to minimize conduction of heat to the seal. Specification 412,031 is referred to.
