BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, and GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., Magnet House, Kingsway, both in London.-(Assignees of Germer, E. ; 42, Ulricistrasse, Wannsee, Berlin) July 3, 1936, No. 18520. Convention date, July 3, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] The invention relates to high pressure metal vapour electric discharge devices in which the electrodes are of solid thermionically emitting material, and in particular to lamps operated with the line joining the electrodes horizontal. In order to avoid contact of the discharge with the tubular envelope 1 of the lamp, the line joining the electrodes 2, 3 is displaced so far below the axis of the lamp that the discharge column 4 which is bowed upwards is everywhere at a substantial distance from the envelope. The main electrodes may be surrounded by shields also displaced from the axis of the envelope and devices to facilitate starting may be provided. The lamp fitting may be such that the lamp can be inserted only in the correct position. Specification 11140/11, [Class 39 (i)], is referred to.
