[Class 146 (iii)] In a fountain pen of the kind having the ink enclosed in a removable cartridge 16, means is provided for carrying a reserve supply which can be brought into use when required. The reserve supply can be carried in a compartment 17 formed in the barrel or cap of the pen. When the reserve supply is carried in the barrel, the nib-section 10 may be arranged for insertion at either end of the barrel, or two nib-sections may be provided ; in the latter case, the two compartments may be utilized with inks of different colours and reserve cartridges may be carried in the nib-covering caps. The cartridges, when inserted in the barrel are preferably pierced by the application of a cap 14 or the nib-section 10, the piercer 19 being on the end of the nib-section and having a passage 12 connected with the feed-duct. The cartridge and barrel may be formed with co-operating formations to prevent relative rotation, and a rubber sleeve 21 compressed between the cartridge and the nib-section may be provided to prevent leakage. In a further modification, the reserve container is mounted in a compartment communicating with the main compartment, and can be pierced to permit the flow of ink to the main compartment when required.
