Abstract

463,277. Electric couplings. SANDERS & CO. (WEDNESBURY), Ltd., W., and WAITE, R. T. Nov. 4, 1935, No. 30399. [Class 38 (i)] Relates to a combined plug coupling and switch of the kind having a cover above the live sockets and in which the cover is moved out of the closing-position by the insertion of the earth pin of the plug into its socket, the cover being returned automatically to the closing-position when the plug is withdrawn. According to the present invention, the cover is held in the closing-position over the live pin sockets by a lever which is operated in one direction by a switch and in the other direction by a moving part of the switch in such a manner that the plug can be inserted only when the switch is " off." The live sockets 7, an earthed socket 6, and a switch 12 are mounted on an insulating base 5, and a cover 9 pivoted between the sockets is normally kept in the closing-position, above the sockets 7, by a spring 19. A tongue 15, pivoted in a vertical slot in the earthed socket 6, turns the cover 9 on its pivot to uncover the line sockets 7 when the earth pin of the plug is inserted in the socket 6. A lever 8, pivoted at 10 near the socket 6 has one end 14 which projects into the path of a projection 13 on a movable part of the switch 12. The other end of the lever 8 is formed into a hook 11 which engages the cover when in the closing-position above the sockets 7. A spring coiled around the pivot of the lever urges the hook 11 towards the cover 9, so that the hook locks the cover, and prevents the insertion of the plug, until the projection 13 swings the lever 8 to one side when the switch is moved to the " off " position.
