[Class 18] A blank of the form shown in Fig. 6 constituting the bottom, top, back and front of a box, crate, &c. for transport, storage, &c., and comprising four or some other number of walls and attached cleats, is made by feeding a pre-positioned set of boards from a hopper 12, Fig. 1, and a prepositioned set of cleats from hoppers 13 by projections on feed bars 20 carried by endless chains 19 to a mechanism indicated at 27 which staples the boards and cleats together. A presser 25 prevents the boards from over-riding. The sets of boards in the hopper 12 are spaced by members 15, the lowermost set of which fall through an aperture in the table 11. The reloading of the hopper 12 during the running of the machine is facilitated by inserting sets of boards through an opening 39, Fig. 1, and permitting sets of spacers 15 to fall one at a time from a stack by hand- or footactuated members 38. The feed members may be carried by the chains instead of by feed bars. The cleats and /or wall boards may be pre-united by staples as in Fig. 9, the staples being, if desired, merely clinched or riveted over instead of being bent over, or by thin flexible spiked plates as in Fig. 11. The plates may be straddled by, or' apertured to receive the link of staples. Hair-pin staples 28a, Fig. 9, may be employed at the ends, or a wire or other binding material 32, Fig. 6, may be carried from end to end of the blank in a groove in the cleats, this binding material being led from spools 29, Fig. 1. The binding 32 may be used if the cleats and walls are not preunited. The staples securing the cleats to the boards straddling the binding 32. The free ends of staples 28, Fig. 9, are preferably on that face of the cleat which is remote from the box wall. The stapling mechanism may be controlled by dogs on the chain 19 or on one or more interchangeable supplementary chains.. Specification 417,358 is referred to.
