Abstract
462,352. Hydraulic transmission of power. BHARADE, B. S., and NATHAN, S. V. April 28, 1936, No. 12088. Convention date, Oct. 14, 1935. [Class 69 (ii)] [Also in Groups XXXI and XXXIV] Velocipede driving-mech anism comprises a pair of pedal levers each connectec to a piston slidable in a cylinder connected by a con duit to another cylinder, the piston of which is operatively connected to the driving wheel, the cylinders and conduits being filled with liquid. In the form shown in Fig. 1, on each side of a bicycle a pedal 7 is fixed to a lever 5 pivoted at 6 and linked to a piston 10 working in a liquid-filled cylinder 11 connected by a pipe 12 to the front end of a cylinder 13. Each cylinder 13 contains pistons 15, 16 connected by a rack 14 meshing with a pinion 17 which meshes with a pinion 19 driving the axle through a free wheel. The rear ends of the cylinders 13 are connected and contain liquid to insure alternate operation of the pedals. In place of, or in addition to, this arrangement, the levers 5 may each be connected to a piston 23 working in one limb of a liquid-filled U-tube 22. The levers 5 are preferably mounted as showr in Fig. 6, with a V - groove 52 resting on a knife edge 45, and an arcuate portion 53 ir contact with a roller 46, and their stroke may be limited by stops 37. The drive may alternatively be transmitted to the driving wheel through cranks, and the pedal levers or pairs of pistons may be mechanically connected by links, chains, &c. to ensure their alternate operation.
