Abstract

461,255. Windscreen-cleaners. LUCAS, Ltd., J., WATSON, E. A., ROBINSON, E. H. C., and HUYTON, A. Aug. 13, 1935, No. 22774. [Class 138 (i)] Operating mechanism for a windscreencleaner comprises a driving member, a driven member capable of lateral movement relatively to the driving member, and a crank or equivalent means associated with the driven member for actuating an oscillatory wiper arm or arms, so that with the driven member in one extreme lateral position, the arm is oscillated between suitable limits on the screen whilst with the driven member in the other extreme lateral position the arm can be brought to rest in an unobstructive position. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a worm a driven by a flexible shaft d engages a worm wheel b, the spindle of which carries a crank c connected by a rod g and crank f to an oscillatory wiper arm. The worm wheel b and its spindle e are carried by a slide l which is capable of being displaced within limits determined by a slot n, displacement being effected by means of an eccentric p on a shaft q provided with a finger piece. The shaft q also carries a cam s adapted to actuate a lever j which is connected by a cable t to a clutch (not shown). Fig. 2 shows the position of the mechanism when the wiper is operating. To stop the wiper, the finger piece is rotated so that the cam s permits the lever j to be actuated by a spring k. The end of the lever rides on a disc h secured to the spindle e and eventually falls into a notch i, whereupon the cable t declutches the flexible shaft d from its drive. The worm wheel b is moved to the left at the same time so that the wiper arm is brought to rest in a horizontal position indicated by 1. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the spindle e of the worm wheel b is carried by a slide l which is formed with a slot w for engaging a crank v on the spindle q fitted with a finger piece. The spindle e carries a cam x which is adapted to operate an electric switch z whereby the driving mechanism is declutched electromagnetically when the wiper is moved to its horizontal position. In a further modification shown in Figs. 7 and 9, the worm wheel b is not capable of displacement, but is connected to a crank 6 secured to a hollow spindle 7 to which is also secured the crank c operatively connected to the wiper arm. Within the spindle 7 is a shaft 8 provided with a finger piece r, the shaft at its inner end having an eccentric 9 carried by the casing m. To the eccentric is secured a cam 10 adapted to act on the lever j. The wiper is inoperative with the mechanism in the position shown. When the finger piece r is rotated the shaft 8 and spindle 7 are displaced whereby the wiper arm is moved to a position at one end of its normal traverse, and the lever j is operated to cause engagement of the clutch and permit rotation of the worm wheel b to effect the oscillation of the wiper. U.S.A. Specification 1,906,047 is referred to.
