Abstract

459,995. Ball bearings. PACKARD MOTOR CAR CO., Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. May 19, 1936, No. 14151. Convention date, June 29, 1935. [Class 12 (i)] A pair of ball bearings are mounted on a shaft or support 10 by pressing one race ring 15 towards the other 14 so as to deform, beyond the elastic limit, a sleeve 21 spacing the race rings 14, 15. The bearings are then clamped in position by peening a part 24 of a ring 23 into a groove 13 on the shaft 10. The method of mounting permits the balls 18, 19, to be preloaded without overloading them. The deformable portion of the spacing ring may originally be cylindrical, crimped, or corrugated.
