[Class 8 (ii)] [See also Group I] A cylindrical or conical filter element formed by winding wire of circular cross-section is arranged for filtration inward, and a brush rotatable about the axis of the filter relatively to the filter acts upon the outside of the latter. As shown in Fig. 1 the filter element is formed by coiling wire 4 on a perforated cylinder 3, the correct spacing of the convolutions being ensured by winding the wire on soft strips of lead foil or other plastic material arranged along the wall of the cylinder. The cylinder is fixed on a rotatable shaft 7 and a brush 9 is rotated from the shaft by gear wheels 10, 11, 12. The casing 2 has an inlet 1 and the filtrate is discharged through a trunnion 6. The brush may be formed of bristles or of felt rings. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, two brushes are mounted on a rotatable yoke 15 and the filter element is stationary. Fig. 5 shows a further modification in which the filter is formed of wire wound over the fluted exterior of an impermeable cylinder 3. The liquid is supplied by a pipe 1 to the interior of the cylinder, where impurities settle, and passes upward to the outside of the element, filters into the flutes and is discharged through an outlet pipe 6. The matter settling both inside and outside the filter is discharged on removal of a screw plug 8. These filters are especially applicable on motor vehicles the movement for brushing the filter being derived from a moving part such as a brake or clutch-pedal lever or the steering-column.
