Abstract

O- and C-alkyl and acyl derivatives of phenols are manufactured by condensing a carboxylic acid or an alcohol with a phenol in the presence of a heteropoly acid. Alternatively, the nuclear derivatives are manufactured by transforming the O-derivatives in the presence of a heteropoly acid. In examples: (1) benzoic acid and phenol are heated with silicomolybdic acid to produce phenyl benzoate; (2) phosphotungstic acid is used in the process of (1), the product being phenyl benzoate, o- and p-hydroxybenzophenone and benzaurine; (3) 1 - naphthyl acetate is heated with phosphotungstic acid and acetic acid to yield 2- and 4-aceto-1-naphthol; (4) methanol vapour is passed into a heated mixture of phenol and phosphomolybdic acid, producing anisol; (5) a mixture of m-cresol and phosphotungstic acid is treated with isopropyl alcohol, yielding a mixture of isomeric isopropyl-m-cresols (including thymol), and a little m-cresyl isopropyl ether; (6) m-cresyl isopropyl ether is heated with silicotungstic acid to produce isopropyl-m-cresols and some higher propylated cresols.
