Abstract

Mono-olefines are condensed with aromatic compounds in the presence of addition compounds obtained from boron fluoride containing at least one hydrogen atom capable of dissociation, e.g. compounds of boron fluoride with water such as the dihydrate, with alcohols such as the diethylalcoholate, or with acids such as the diacetate or the compounds with phosphoric acid described in Specification 451,359, [Group III]. Olefines specified are ethylene, propylene, isohexylene, and nonylene; aromatic compounds specified are benzene and its homologues, polynuclear hydrocarbons such as naphthalene and hydroxy compounds such as phenols. Elevated temperatures and pressures are preferable. In examples: (1) naphthalene is treated with ethylene or propylene in presence of boron fluoride dihydrate; (2) naphthalene is treated with isononylene in presence of a compound obtained from boron fluoride and phosphoric acid; (3) phenol is treated with propylene in presence of boron fluoride dihydrate; (5) naphthalene is treated with isohexylene in presence of the dialcoholate of boron fluoride with ethyl alcohol.
