Abstract

448,706. Discharge lamps. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and DAVIES, L. J., 147, Murray Road, Rugby. Dec. 12, 1934, No. 35720. [Class 39 (i)] A lamp of the type in which the filling of gas and metal vapour is such that the discharge starts as a glow and changes to a constricted arc has a low work-function cathode arranged near to the anode and means for creating a magnetic field to deflect and lengthen the arc. The magnetic means may be so arranged that increase of the arc length which is accompanied by voltage increase, compensates for the negative resistance of the lamp. In one form, two self - heating electrodes 1, 2 are arranged close together in a pear-shaped envelope 6 which is enclosed in an evacuated or oxygen-filled container 9 carrying a cap 10 in which an inductance 7, serving to lengthen the arc 8, is mounted. The envelope 6 is mounted on a frame 11 supported by a band 12 on the pinch 13. The inductance may be arranged below the arc.
