[Class 83 (iv)] [See also Group V] A press for extruding metals, synthetic resins, or other materials, of the type comprising an upright container 5 for the material to be extruded, a fixed hollow ram 6 carrying a die 10 and a tapered core 11 held in fixed relation with the die during extrusion, has a pair of spaced hydraulic rams 2, 2a for moving the container 5 to effect the extrusion operation, and the relatively short core 11 is carried by a long support 12 which passes through the base of the container and into the space between the cylinders, and which may be lowered after extrusion for removing the residue and for changing the core, and is held in raised operative position by a block 17 beneath an abutment 13. The support 12 may be raised by a piston 15 or by hand-operated levers. After extrusion, when the residue of the material has been carried over the tapered portion of the core 11, the container is lowered by auxiliary rams 21, 22, or the rams 2, 2a may be double-acting for this purpose, and a slotted plate, bars, or other support is placed on the top of the container, and the core is lowered to leave the residue on the plate.
