Abstract

455,664. Cooling cylinders. ROWLEDGE, A. J., Ellerslie, Trowels Lane, Derby. July 11, 1935, No. 19823. [Class 7 (ii)] In a sleeve - valve engine, cooling air, flowing from the inlet to the exhaust side, is deflected by a baffle D<1> into each cylinder head recess and on to coaxial ribs B which are cut away at B4 round a sparking-plug C<1> on the exhaust side, the plug being thus cooled by the air escaping around it. The baffle D<1>, which may be curved as shown at E, is connected to the engine cowling D and has a tongue D<2>, which may be integral with the cylinder head, extending down to the ribs B but cut away at D<3> to provide access, with a box spanner, to a central sparking-plug C ; a plate D<4> closes the gap when the box spanner is removed. The outer cooling rib is higher than the others, and the inner ribs are cut away at B<3> to encourage air flow to the centre of the recess. In a modification, the baffle has a bent-back portion which clears the central sparking-plug and divides the air into two streams, each again being divided at the bottom of the recess, one flowing back around the plug C and the other forward around the plug C<1>.
