Abstract

455,591. Discharge apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON - HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London. May 4, 1936, No. 12582. Convention date, May 4, 1935. [Class 39 (i)] In mercury, gallium, cadmium, &c. vapour discharge tubes, the reserve of the vapourforming medium is contained in a chamber 17, Fig. 2, of low heat conductivity projecting outwardly from the envelope and having mounted thereon a heat-radiating structure 14 constructed, for example, with vanes 19. The chamber 17 is formed by pinching the end of a tube 15 the conductivity of which is made low by reason of its small cross-section or by using a material of low conductivity or by incorporating a heat insulating barrier in its structure. The radiating structure consists of a copper &c. cylinder 18 and a plurality of channel members 19 forming the vanes. Thermal contact with the chamber is maintained by a mass of fusible material 20 such as solder. Alternatively the vanes may be constructed by pairs of metal sheets formed so as to envelope the chamber. In the application described, the discharge tube has a metal envelope 1, Fig. 1, forming the anode. The cathode 3 is a pleated metal ribbon of nickel &c. coated with an emissive material such as barium oxide. The lead-in connections are as described in Specification 448,727, [Group XI].
