Abstract

347,127. Metallic-vapour apparatus. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London.-(Assignees of Mailey, R. D. ; 323, Springdale Avenue, East Orange, New Jersey, U.S.A.) Jan. 13, 1930, No. 1188. Convention date, Jan. 12, 1929. [Class 39 (i).] To vary the vapour pressure within a discharge device, the temperature of an electrode chamber within which vapour tends to condense is varied by means of an axial sleeve slidably mounted thereon. A tube 1 has an indirectly-heated cathode 3 and a filling of mercury, lithium or sodium, and a gas such as neon to facilitate starting. A metal sleeve 7 frictionally engages with and is preferably shorter than an electrode chamber 6 within which condensate collects in a pool 5. In a modification (Fig. 2, not shown), a mercury-arc device of the Cooper-Hewitt type has two anode chambers surrounded by sleeves, which conduct heat to the seals and prevent the condensation of mercury thereon.
