F., Tameside Works, Dobcross, Oldham. May 31, 1935, No. 15903. [Class 80 (ii)] [See also Groups XVIII and XXXV] A small synchronous electric motor a, Fig. 1, for driving rent-charge mechanism of a prepayment meter is apt to start in either direction, and in order that a shaft may be driven alwavs in the same direction, this reversing-gear connects the shaft to a spindle c driven directly from the motor a. A boss d fast on the spindle c carries a spring steel wire e which extends parallel to the spindle over two oppositely-set ratchet wheels f and g. The wheels f and g are loose on the spindle c and rigid respectively with toothed pinions f<1>, gl, which both mesh constantly with a crown wheel b fast on the shaft j. One end of the wire e always grips and drives as shown in Fig. 3, and the drive to the shaft j is the same whichever way the motor a starts up. The shaft can be turned by hand in the same direction as the motor drives it by a thumb wheel i, Fig. 1, fast on that shaft. This provides a handy means of testing the accuracy of the hire charge collected.
