[Class 27.] Mechanism for prepaying basic charges.-In a prepayment meter, particularly an electricity meter, having means for collecting a basic charge, such as rent, a switch controlling device, comprising a disc 2 with a gapped flange 3 is fixed to a spindle 12 carrying the radius arm of the planet wheel 11 of a first differential, to one sun-wheel 5 of which is fixed a coinactuated star-wheel 1. The other sun-wheel 6 is connected by gears 7, 8, 9 to one sun-wheel 10 of a second differential, of which the other sun-wheel 14 is driven through gearing 15, 16 by a constant speed motor, and the planet wheel 17 is mounted to rotate bodily with a spindle 19 connected to the motor mechanism of the meter. The connection between the spindle 19 and the meter comprises wheels 18, 18<1>, 20, the wheel 20 being free on the spindle 12 and driving through gearing 21 a flier 22 the arms 23 of which co-operate with flats 25 on a barrel 24 driven by the meter. When the star-wheel 1 is rotated by a coin, the disc 2 is rotated against the action of a spring 13 which constitutes the driving means for returning the disc 2 to zero as the sun-wheel 6 rotates. During consumption the meter permits the flier 22 to rotate and consequently the planet wheel 17 moves round bodily permitting rotation of the wheels 10, 6 and the planet wheel 11. The constant speed motor rotates the wheel 17 axially, the drive being transmitted to the sun-wheel 6. The constant speed motor may be arranged to drive the disc 2 beyond zero in order to collect arrears of rent.
