[Class 38 (ii)] [See also Group XXXVI] To increase the breakdown voltage of the dielectric layer of a condenser a thin firmly adhering layer of solid semi-conducting metal compound is provided on one or both electrodes between the electrode and the dielectric layer. The semi-conducting layer, which has a specific resistance high compared with that of the electrodes, but less than 10<5> ohms per cm<3>., and which may either be formed by chemical action on the surface of the electrode or applied to the electrode as a suspension, may consist of cuprous oxide or sulphide, cupric oxide or iodide, or manganese dioxide.
