Abstract

452,696. Making valves; forging; rolling. SCRIMGEOUR, W., 1113, 17th Street, N.W., Washington, U.S.A. Dec. 28, 1935, No. 35913. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] In the production of valves particularly for internal-combustion engines, a solid cylindrical blank is formed into a tube, with a closed end which is collapsed to form the head after the tubular part has been reduced and elongated. Forging methods may be employed and these may be combined with rolling operations. A cylindrical blank 10, Fig. 4, is placed in a die having one member '2 with a bore approximately cylindrical and a second member 4 having a hemispherical recess. A punch, carried by a holder 8 forces the blank 10<1> to a ssume the form shown. By placing the blank between rolls 20, Figs. 8 and 10, the stem part of the valve is partly formed by rolling down at 10<b> and subsequent rolling with the aid of rolls 20<1> shaped as shown in Fig. 11 completes the shaping of the stem. The globular part 10<a> of the blank is then flattened to form the valve head. The rolling mill shown in Fig. 8, has the rolls 25 adjusted by means of a power piston 27 and gearing 28 transmit motion to the rolls 20.
