[Class 40 (i)] [See also Group XX] Electric contacts are closed when a body 1, suspendec by a spring 2 or by an electric or magnetic field, is at its end or other predetermined position. To measure the force of gravity current supplied through a galvanometer 15 tc a solenoid 3 surrounding the body 1 is varied until the pointed end of the latter just contacts with a metal plate 6 connected through a galvanometer 9 or telephone to a battery 7. The current supplied to the solenoid 3 is then a measure of the force of gravity. The solenoid 3 may be replaced by an electrostatic field or by mechanical devices such as levers.
